Popular Libertarian Father and YouTuber: "College is a scam"
The Rot of College is Becoming Overwhelmingly Obvious to Everyone
“In this particular climate, I think college is a scam”
College is as dead as Bernie in Weekend at Bernies. It’s long gone. The only thing maintaining its lively appearance are the few worthwhile degrees and “college experience”.
Well, it won’t be long before the jig is up and the whole thing crumbles.
The question of whether or not to go to college has never been more important.
Millions are still enrolling to universities and for that it seems like the “safe route”, but do the costs outweigh the benefits?

Advice from a father
Cody’s son, Jack, has wanted to go to college for awhile. Jack knows exactly what he wants to do and he is ready to spend 6 years in college to obtain a degree.
(Cody didn’t specify what Jack wants to do in order to maintain his privacy)
He supports his son’s decision, but he has some requirements for him…
The colleges they are looking at cost $40-50k/year. Cody is willing to pay for half if Jack pays the rest through money he accumulates from working as a wildland firefighter or other means.
All of this with his son, plus frequent comments from young men, sparked Cody to make this video:
You see, young men come to Cody for advice. He’s a man who has built a comfortable life for himself and his family, has a moral code, and does interesting things.
He doesn’t have all the answers, but he’s been around the block.
Cody sees how rotten the university system is. So, with all these comments flowing in from young men about what to do with their life came in, he started off by saying:
“In this particular climate, I think college is a scam”
And:
“The student loans-how easy they make that. And the fact that you can never bankrupt it, and you’ll have that millstone hanging around your neck for your entire life is a big, big problem.
I think that 18 and 19 year olds are not able to fully comprehend what a hinderance that is going to be to you.
You are going to be a financial slave with that.”
But, he went further…
After all, young men need advice, we need solutions.
Cody’s advice started off with an unoriginal idea: If you want to become a doctor or engineer, then yes, you’ve got to go to college.
Yet, the advice he gave to the rest of young men who are uncertain of their pursuits was fantastic.
To summarize: If you don’t know what to do, then you should look into the skilled trades. You could become an electrician and go all the way to become a journeyman in 3 years.
If you end up deciding that that’s not what you want to do , it’s okay, you can move on to something else. You would have at least learned a set of skills that would allow you to provide value for others. And, you can fall back on those skills for financial support at any time.
The boomers are retiring, which means there will be a massive increase in demand for men with skills in the trades.
Many guys in the trades are making $30/hour off the bat. Some journeymen are making upwards of $50/hour.
Skills and capital will put you in a much better position than debt and a degree ever could.
Action
The argument does expand past the simple rivalry of college vs. the trades.
There are many opportunities for young men. Only lack of understanding of them and lack of ambition is stopping us from living as men should live.
Despite the fact that Cody’s video was only focused on college and the trades he brought forth an idea we need to hear more often:
Do something.
Take action.
The biggest problem is figuring out exactly what to do. Yes, you have the trades. But, there’s got to be more, right? There is, and that’s why we created The Preparation program.
The (supposed) promise of college is financial independence through a degree. The promise of the trades is skills and, possibly, financial independence.
The Preparation can offer you skills, character development, education, and financial independence.
But, there’s a catch…your success is completely up to you. There’s no coasting along in an institution. Only those with ambition with succeed.
We are developing a book for the program as you read this.
For now, if you want a glimpse into my version of the program, you can subscribe to this Substack page and receive weekly updates on what I’m doing.
If you become a paid subscriber you’ll have access to every previous week summary.
If you’re a young man and you aren’t sure of what your future looks like, I suggest that you take a look at my weekly updates.
I want all young men possible to have access to the updates. In fact, if you’re a young man looking to go through The Preparation, email me directly at thegreatmenpodcast@gmail.com and I will give you 25% off your paid subscription.
(Same goes for any parents or grandparents who are interested in The Preparation for their kids or grandkids.)
Cody makes great videos on a variety of different things. Sometimes he speaks his mind on a popular subject, other times he’s making videos about one of his home projects.
It’s all good content.
I highly recommend you check out his YouTube page.
